My Tutoring Style
Adapt:
I consciously adapt to a students needs and level of understanding. Whether the student is looking to review for a test, or set up a weekly tutoring session, I provide the necessary help to succeed.
Math and Physics are particularly cummulative subjects by nature; topics build upon previous concepts which are derived from even more basic principles. I assess a students’ grasp on all fundamental topics and focus on weak areas before embarking on new ones. It’s the most effective way to learn tough subjects.
Relax:
I’ve been told my tutoring style is relaxed, yet focused. Effective, but painless. It’s my goal to provide a student with a laid-back environment where they feel free to ask any questions and not feel pressure to act “smart” or ask “intelligent” questions. You wouldn’t need tutoring if you already knew everything.
Interact:
If it’s homework help, or a quick test review, I am happy to help a student on the surface level. However, I prefer to guide the student to the answer by asking questions about what they already know. It’s in my basic teaching philosophy that this type of interaction with students is healthy and promotes a better understanding of the topic. By getting the student to think, they’ll begin to understand the concept, and not just finish the assignment that’s due tomorrow morning.

A Little Background
I'm Nolan Tsuchiya and I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Early in 2004 I began developing my teaching style and abilities through tutoring math and physics off campus as well as facilitating and lecturing a philosophy course on campus. In April 2009, I’ll be a CA registered Professional Engineer and I plan to pursue a PhD in Engineering in the near future.
Teaching is my passion, not just my job, and it shows in my students progress.
